The first step in learning to live with bipolar disorder is to make the decision to be well. Some people with this and other mental illnesses learn to rely heavily on hospitalization. A hospital is a safe place. A hospital makes it easy. There are times when someone with bipolar disorder may need the support of hospitalization. But, don't feed into the "sick person" mentality. You are not a helpless victim of this disorder. You can be well!
